Though I have a preference for the artistry of the classic comic covers of the last century, I'm happy to see that the traditions of great design and draftsmanship continue to thrive in the comic industry. And as diverse and splintered as comics publishing has become, with as many publishers active today as there was in the heyday of the 1940s, there's still a strong thread of quality running through the industry. While there's some strong work going on in the independent sector, there's no denying that the big two - Marvel and DC - are still creative forces to be reckoned with - and will probably continue to be for the foreseeable future.

JLA: Liberty & Justice 1 (2003)

No survey of the best in cover art would be complete without an example from the hugely talented Alex Ross. His ultra-realistic painting style is unequalled - anywhere.
  Incredible Hulk 77 (2004)

Superbly atmospheric Hulk cover conveys volumes of information. The power and the loneliness just leap off the page.
  Daredevil 71 (2005)

This terrific Daredevil cover is a triumph of design and is inspired by the work of the great graphic designer Saul Bass.
